The healing effect, scientifically proven
Extra virgin olive oil contains several minor components. One of these components it’s squalene. Jaén’s University has proved in a recent study that squalene has positive effects on healing wounds. The study has also proved that oil has a huge capacity to help repair body tissues.
Jaén’s University has recently published this study in “Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine” journal.
It seems that the action of squalene concentrates on macrophages, immune cells that are formed in response to an infection or accumulating damaged or dead cells. Macrophages protect us from infections and encourages skin’s regenerating process.
Extra virgin olive oil, a home remedy
Extra virgin olive oil has always been used as an ingredient in many home remedies. People have been using this natural product as a topic solution on wounds and scars though, until now, there was no scientific compelling evidence of its benefits.
If you wish to apply extra virgin olive oil on your damaged skin, just put a drop of the product on your fingers and massage over the affected area for 4-5 minutes until your skin absorbs it. Finally, use a paper towel to remove the excess. Repeat the process if you wish. By doing this twice a day, you’ll soon notice improvement.
Scars on the face
In this case we can benefit from the healing effect of extra virgin olive oil through the action of steam. This is a traditional home remedy which can be very useful.
Fill a cooking pot with water and warm it but don’t let it boil (be careful not to get burned). Add some extra virgin olive oil to the water and stir with a spoon. After that, put a towel over your head and place your face over the pot. Keep your face at a distance of 50 centimetres from the water (if you get closer that could be dangerous).
The towel must cover both your head and the pot, so as the steam is concentrated under it. The steam opens the pores of your skin, so that the evaporated extra virgin olive oil can penetrate. After 8-10 minutes, take off the towel and wash your face and neck.
